For in what consists our sympathy with the miseries, or with the joys, of our fellow creatures, however in an involuntary excitation of ideas in some measure similar or imitative of these, which we imagine to exist within the minds of the persons, whom we commiserate or congratulate? XIV. 2. 2. Hence it appears, that our perceptions themselves are copies, that’s, imitations of some properties of exterior matter; and the propensity to imitation is thus interwoven with our existence, as it’s produced by the stimuli of external our bodies, and is afterwards repeated by our volitions and sensations, and thus constitutes all of the operations of our minds. This type of pleasure arising from repetition, that’s from the ability and distinctness, with which we understand and understand repeated sensations, enters into all the agreeable arts; and when it’s carried to excess is termed formality. A certain uniformity or repetition of parts enters the very composition of harmony. In this case a double imitation takes place, first the observer imitates with the extremities of the optic nerve the mangled limbs, that are current before his eyes; then by a second imitation he excites to violent action of the fibres of his personal limbs as to produce pain in these components of his own body, which he noticed wounded in another.
The origin of this propensity of imitation has not, that I recollect, been deduced from any identified precept; when any action presents itself to the view of a baby, as of whetting a knife, or threading a needle, the elements of this motion in respect of time, motion, determine, is imitated by a part of the retina of his eye; to carry out this motion subsequently together with his hands is less complicated to him than to invent any new action, as a result of it consists in repeating with one other set of fibres, viz. Of these are all the irritative ideas already defined, as when the retina of the attention imitates by its motion or configuration the tree or the bench, which I shun in walking previous without attending to them. If to those be added our early associations of agreeable ideas with certain proportions of sound, I suppose, from these three sources springs all the delight of music, so celebrated by historical authors, and so enthusiastically cultivated at current. See Sect. XXXIII. 2. 6. Other situations are talked about in the Section on Generation, which shew the likelihood that the extremities of the seminal glands might imitate sure ideas of the mind, or actions of the organs of sense, and thus occasion the male or female intercourse of the embryon.
